Emulating A Professional Photographer

Writer's picture: Rachel KramsRachel Krams

I believe this is the best photo I took for this assignment because the photo leaves room for interpretation. This is a more recent adaptation of a similar photo, yet this one comes from the perspective of a college student. The clutter leaves room for interpretation. Why so many boxes? Why is the curtain slanted? In the first photo by Jeff Wall, you might be asking similar questions. What happened to the wall? Why is the mattress ripped? I especially like this photo because it was not staged, it was a raw photo of my actual bedroom with no alterations made to change how the room would be viewed. I like how this gives an authentic feel to the photo, even though it may just be clutter. In the future, I will work to capture more photos that leave room for wonder and interpretation.

Rachel! I enjoyed your multimodal presentation so much that I wanted to check out your own personal photography style! I eagerly enjoyed how you emulated Jeff Wall in your pictures this week. Like you said, most specifically, the rawness of his photographic nature. This stripped-down reality allows the viewer to take a deep dive into the world of the photographer, exactly how both you and Wall were able to with the photos of the messy rooms. There is something aesthetically evaluative about a messy room that really is only considered beautiful in this aesthetically evaluative photographic perspective. Without the artist's perspective to create that aesthetically pleasing lens, a mess would be a mess, but with it, it is beautiful.

Hi Rachel,

I really like this photo, and after going through your other pictures, I can see that you've done a good job emulating your photographers style. This one, in particular, caught my attention because it feels relatable and candid. The messy room isn't just a stages scene, it comes across as authentic and unfiltered. Your ability to capture the essence of the photographer's work is evident, and I appreciate how you've made it something many people can relate to. Great work! - Aby Romain

Hi Rachel! I really loved this photo, when I was looking through your emulating a photographer page I was hoping that you'd choose this image as your best one because I liked the authenticity. I really like the element of realism that you described about how this is your natural untouched bedroom, and it almost contrasts Jeff Wall's more chaotic photo because yours is so authentic. I really liked the way it appeared the curtains were falling down amidst all the other clutter, it gives me the feeling of not being able to control your life amidst the chaos. I also really liked the way you described how the photo is for the viewer's interpretation, because I think there are…

Ethically Evaluative By: Linh Yoshimura

I selected this photo as an Ethically Evaluative photograph because this image captures an elderly woman injured by a U.S.-Vietnamese air strike on a being carried to be taken care of. This photo fits this category because it demonstrates a sense of patriotism and pride towards helping another individual in need of support or care.

Theoretical By: Remedios Varo

Because this piece features elements of conceptual art, I find that it falls under the Theoretical category of art. It is not a traditional photo, it includes elements of photography mixed with modern creativity and alterations that allow for us to view this piece theoretically.
